Overview
Designing on a web is the act of making information prominent & attractive to the site visitor so that a user finds the information more readable. It is considered that web designing is not a skill but an art. To hire a professional web designer for your organization is not an easy task. And on the other side it’s not easy for graphic designers, web designers or front end developers to get hired in the most professional web design firms.
Generally it is known that interview is the act of knowing about the skills of the person intended to be hired by an organization. There are two roles defined in the interview process that are:
- Interviewer
- Interviewee
And the communication gap should be filled from both side either interviewer or interviewee. An organization has a required skill set which they are looking into the interviewee.
And for this an Interviewee must follow the recommended Seven P’s in order to fulfill the requirements of web designing post (opportunity).
Preparation

Before you go for the interview you need to prepare yourself accordingly.
A wise saying is that:
“There will always be a prepared place for a prepared person”
Consider the following tips on what to prepare:
I. Prepare your Portfolio
- There are many designers who are working from many years but they still do not have an online portfolio. If you are from them then how would you expect a good job?
- Review down the portfolio that is the websites which you have designed till yet is an important task before appearing to the interview.
- In order to judge how effectively you design websites, Interviewers always look forward to view your portfolios.
- Before appearing to the interviewer, make sure that your website links are not broken.
- Your coding style should be neat and clean plus code should be well managed. I didn’t mean that you redesign your website but you can manage the things as much as you can.
Consider a Few examples of online portfolio as mentioned below:
II. Prepare your Appearance
- Your appearance is another important aspect which is usually ignored by the people.
- It is said that first impression is the last impression. Whenever you wear decent cloths with charming colors it always appeal good to the interviewer.
- Also it is not recommended that you wear brand new cloths from tie to shoes, it may have the bad impression on the interviewer. Always wear used cloths that are neat and clean.
- Do not choose dark or bright colors, use light colors like your dress shirt color should be white or light blue.
III. Prepare your resume and supplies
- A day before update your resume and modify it a little according to the job description specified by the employer.
- Take enough print outs of your resume so that it may be required by other persons sittings adjacent to the interviewer.
- Don’t forget to bring your pen with you, in fact you may bring a note pad and place all things into the nice folder.
IV. Prepare by doing Research about an Organization
- It’s a professional act that an Interviewee must see the company’s website before appearing for the interview.
- Reviewing the company’s website before the interview help web designers to know about the expectations of the employer.
- You can review the complete organization portfolio; this will help you to know about what type of projects company has worked on.
- You can review the company’s profile, mission & statement and other important information about the company. It will have a good impression to the interviewer.
Punctual

The dictionary defines the word “PUNTUAL” as mentioned below:
Acting or arriving exactly at the time appointed; prompt.
It is not good to be late from the Interview especially before even you are hired. Getting late from the given time gives the bad impression to the Interviewer and shows person’s careless and irresponsible attitude. Remember first Impression is the last impression. So make your first impression good to your employer.
There are a few recommendations you need to follow in order to reach on the given time:
- Prepare all your required things for the interview in night. For example making your cloths ready, Important Folder and relevant documents etc…
- If you are not known to the location, it’s better to consult the Google map to find the company’s location.
- Always give yourself enough time to reach to the Interview that is 15-20 mins before the given time.
- Just intimate them after when you reached to their office.
Polite

- An interviewer may start questioning session by asking about you.
Like “Explain about yourself”. Answer to this question very precisely that is about your professional education, your previous experience and your goals/aims. - Don’t go negative about your previous employer. During the Interview, don’t be rude and nervous and try to be polite as possible.
- Always use positive words, prefer the use of:
- Excuse Me
- Yes Sir
- Pardon Me
- Thank you
- No Maam
You may asked by the interviewer about latest web trends, the way you code, about latest tools, technologies of web designing. So be prepared technically before appearing to the interview.
Last but not least, don’t use irrelevant speech or show any vulgarity. Some questions they might ask in order to judge your response. In this regard you are not allowed to say:
It’s a common sense.
It is! But you would be surprised at how many people slip and say something fool or inappropriate during the interview. Thus smart attitude will be encouraged and you may get success.
Pay Attention

- An interviewer may ask about everything for example concepts, patterns, architecture, model, tools, technologies, web trends, so pay attention to the questions what are being asked from you.
- Always show your positive attitude to the questions being asked and answer each and every question precisely and accurately.
- An interviewer may check your confidence level & try to confuse you but just welcome to each and every question.
Asking valid questions (from your interviewer) is the good sign to show them that you are trying to learn more and you are paying attention. Another good way of impressing the interviewer is to ask questions about the company.
So above mentioned recommendations can leads you toward success.
Passionate

- Showing passion about your field is the good way to impress your interviewer.
- Try to make them feel of how much conscious you are about your field, learning and adopting new tools and technologies.
- Tell them about the latest tools and technologies you are engaged with.
- I have seen so many persons who look so bored, tired and uninterested. Don’t be like them. Have positive and confident tone on your voice.
By the way, if I would be the employer then I would like to hire that person for my organization who is passionate about the job and want to learn and grow with the technology enhancements.
Promote

- A job interview is the time to proof yourself that you are fit for this job, so be ready for this.
- And it is really a time where the company gets to know you and you get to know more about the company.
- Usually interviewer asks single question that “Why you want this job”? So be ready for this question. If you are really good in certain area like CSS/ X-html or Java Scripting then engaged them for questioning more in these areas than other.
Let them know how you can give advantage to their company and try to make them feel that you do not like frequent switches to the companies. I am not saying that you tell a lie, but give them a valid reason why they should hire you.
Post Interview
So everything has gone well. You were prepared well, you reached on time. You were passionate & you showed them a great courage. You paid attention during the interview and you were polite. They liked your portfolio. You promote yourself during the interview. Then what else now left to do.
Well I have been involved in the hiring sessions from last couple of years; these were my experiences which I have shared with you.
And now I would like to view your feedback about the experiences of Interviews you have ever made/given.
